Howden's Going To The Play Offs!
Beverly 0 Howden 5
Howden will have their chance to play Drypool league football next season...via a play off match against Springhead Rangers. Howden needed to win the game against Beverly to have the play off match, which will be played no doubt this Sunday (9th).
Jordan Burnitt returned to the line up as Rich Hutcinson was on the bench, as was Adam Coates who was back from holiday with assistant manager Pete Coates looking very un-tanned indeed.
Howden therefore fielded: Wright, O'Neil, Mell, Walker, Burnitt, Ellerington, Stevens, Graham, Taylor, West, Thorpe.
Howden started the game brightly and immeditialey scored through Scott Thorpe after he was played in one on one.
Beverly were fighting for every ball, and the ball seemed to spend more time in the air but Howden combatted the physical threat well as Stevens and Graham battled hard in the middle of the park. Panthers game plan was to lump it long and over the top and why not as they had players who were good in the air. However it did not fool Howden who weren't penetrated by the long ball tactics as the Blues gave Beverly a footballing lesson.
The tenacious Ash Taylor soon doudbled Howden's lead with the Blues' creating and missing more chances. Jordan Burnitt flashed a free header wide, Mark West and Scott Thorpe both should have done better with the chances presented to them. They need not worry as Howden were in control but Beverly came back into the game.
Danny Wright had to block bravely at the feet of the Beverly attacker then had another good chance soon afterwards; a free kick was swung over from deep as Wright came to claim the ball but fumbled and the ball went into touch for a corner. The resulting corner was hung over dangerously and a Beverly attacker put a free header over the bar at the back post with the goal at his mercy. Howden were lucky to escape as they went into the break 2-0 up.
The match official couldn't wait to half time as he'd already vommited three times during the first half and was a torrid time. Not least from both sets of players and parents as both sides felt aggrieved by his far-fethced decisions. A lot of desent was oozing from Panther's players mouths but the ref didn't take action.
Still, it couldn't stop Howden as they scored an excellent third goal. A punt from Danny Wright was flicked on by Ash Graham that played in Ash Taylor. The winger made a pacy solo run before burying home with a powerful finish. A lovely goal to say the least as Howden's passing game was causing headaches for a desperate Panthers team.
Jordan Burnitt and O'Neil were having good games as they got involved into the game more. Danny Stevens set up Scott Thorpe to score Howden's fourth but was subbed as Tony Ellerington made three changes. Dave West came on for Stevens, Coates for Graham and Hutcinson for Ellerington. All three were having good games but their replacements did a sound job. Not least Dave West who almost scored his first Howden goal- another long kick from Wright played in West who raced through one on one but his shot was well saved by the Beverly keeper.
It wasn't all good for West who went on injured with Howden playing the remainder of the game with ten men.
Beverly flashed a shot wide and Danny Wright made a smart save with his leg with minutes to go as the Blues preserved their clean sheet.
The full time whistle with the Beverly players storming off no doubt disapointed as they couldn't take anything from their last Wyke league game.
Man Of The Match went to Jamie O'Neil but all the Howden players had a good game in all round team effort.
Howden now face Springhead Rangers in a vital clash to secure promotion. Howden must win this game to bring some honours back to Howden or the end of the season drink will be spent drowning our sorrows instead of celebrating.
Ref Watch- A young referee who looked a bag of nerves. Had a nightmare game and couldn't wait for the full time whistle. 5.
